 What are Wi-Fi hotspots?

Print

A Wi-Fi Hotspot is a location where a wireless connection (Wi-Fi) to the internet is available to Wi-Fi enabled devices such as laptop computers, Wi-Fi phones, iPhones, and other similar devices. In some cases wireless access is free, and in others, users may be charged for usage. Hotspots are often located in airports, hotels, convention centers, restaurants, cafes, libraries etc.

Generally they are two basic kinds of public hotspots, those that are free to use by anyone and subscription-based commercial hotspots where you need to register and create an account before using. Free public Wi-Fi hotspots generally work in one of two ways; open, where a device can automatically connect to the hotspot network when in range and closed hotspots which require each user to agree to Terms of Conditions via a web page before gaining access to the network. Commercial hotspots usually feature a login screen and some option for payment.

Eye-Fi Explore Cards and any other Eye-Fi Card enabled with the Eye-Fi Hotspot service can take advantage of free open hotspots that do not require uses to agree to a Terms of Conditions page and over 10,000 commercial hotspots provided by Wayport. For more information about the Eye-Fi Hotspot Service please read about it here.
