What is Geotagging? |
|
Geotagging refers to the process of adding geographic location data, latitude and longitude coordinates as well as city and state details, to photos you take with your camera and Eye-Fi Explore Card. These details or metadata are added to a photos existing EXIF data are are available to other programs which can allow you to see and share where a photo was taken. EXIF data also includes information that describes the kind of camera used to take the photo, the date and time a photo was taken as well as the camera settings used (including shutter speed, aperture, etc). Geotagging your photos adds a new dimension to how you share and view your photos on and offline. Many online photo sharing services offer varying degrees of support for geotaged photos. Some simply display the city and state information from the EXIF metadata. Others such as SmugMug, Picasa and Flickr provide users ways to view and organize photos by location, letting you view maps of where you took your pictures. Additionally, desktop applications such as Apple iPhoto 09 (Mac only), Adobe’s Photoshop Elements 6 (PC or Mac), Google’s Picasa (PC only), Ovolabs Geophoto (Mac only) and Microsoft’s Pro Photo Tools (PC only) also take advantage of geotagged photos and even allow you to edit or change the location data associated with an individual or group of photos.
