Setting up Eye-Fi Direct Mode with a computer

Enabling Eye-Fi Direct Mode provides you with the freedom to send photos and videos directly to your computer. By enabling Eye-Fi Direct Mode, your Eye-Fi card will broadcast a pre-defined wireless network that your computer can use to receive photos and videos from the card. In order to make use of Eye-Fi Direct Mode on your computer you will need to be sure you have the following before you begin.

  • Eye-Fi Center version 3.3.0 or higher
  • Eye-Fi Card with firmware version 4.5021 or higher
  • A computer with the ability to connect to a WiFi network wirelessly
  • Computer with an internet connection

Part I: Enable Direct Mode on your Eye-Fi card

  1. Update Eye-Fi Center
  2. Update your Eye-Fi Card Firmware
  3. Set your card to upload photos to your computer
  4. Insert your Eye-Fi card in the computer, and open the Eye-Fi Center settings.
  5. Select your card from the Device list and click the Settings gear icon
  6. From the Network Tab, select the ‘Direct Mode’ sub-tab
  7. Check the ‘When no known Wi-Fi networks are in range, start the Direct Mode network.’ check box*
  8. Choose different settings for the “Wait” sliders if desired
  9. Make note of the WPA2 password listed here, you will need this later when requested to enter the “Network Security Key in step II-4 below. You can select the password text to copy it or write it down if you wish.
  10. Click the “Start Direct Mode Network” button to view and add the Eye-Fi card network when deployed on your computer
  11. Click the “Save” button

*The Direct Mode network will only start if there are no other networks for the Eye-fi Card to join.

Part II: Sending photos to your computer via Direct Mode

  1. Insert your Eye-Fi Card into your camera and shoot several pictures
  2. Launch Eye-Fi Helper on the computer set to receive photos from Part I Step 3 above if not already running
  3. Select your Eye-Fi Card Direct Mode network from the list of available wireless networks on your computer.
  4. If this is the first time you are connecting, you will be prompted for the WPA2 password from step I-9 above referred to as the “Network Security Key”. Enter the key.
  5. The computer will now attempt to connect to the network. Once connected images will start transferring automatically.

Note: It is important to understand that a Direct Mode network will only start when there are no other networks available for the card to join.

If images do not arrive after connecting to the Direct Mode network, check the firewall settings on your computer.
